Ayurvedic Therapies

Ayurveda offers many therapies for mind, body and spirit.

There is the full health consultation where we can look at your past and present health leading to a plan
for your future health; there is Abhyanga, which is a full body 90 minute massage; Shirodhara which
is a treatment for insomnia, anxiety, depression and stress; we have treatments for joint and spine issues
called a Kati Basti; then there is Nasya, a treatment for Sinus conditions;
and even eye treatments called Netra Basti.

Health Plan Consultations

Besides a thorough history taking of your health and your biological family members health, Ayurvedic Practitioners also look at your tongue (for specific signs of health or ill health), your eyes (iridology) to see your health history and any areas of your health you may need to keep a lookout for, any facial markings (that can support the tongue and eye diagnoses) and your nails.  Looking at what you want to achieve for your health Sophia can then draw up a Health Plan based on the 4 key areas to support good health - your nutritional intake, your daily activities, herbal medicine and remedial treatments.

Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Massage)

Picture
Picture
The intention of an Abhyanga to to shift your energy and relieve blockages to the flow of good health.  A very oily warm massage that starts at your feet and works it sway up your posterior legs, back/neck/shoulders and posterior arms.  After a short rest you roll over onto your back and I return to your feet and legs working my way up to your arms, upper chest and abdomen.  After another short rest you sit up for the oily scalp massage that is designed to wake you and your nervous system up and leave you feeling rested but alert.  Not advised during pregnancy, this massage is best in the time before conceiving and after 10 weeks postnatal.  You can give yourself an oily self massage during pregnancy and early postnatal which would be excellent for you and the baby.  I am happy to show you how you can do that for maximum benefit.

Shirodhara

Picture
A Shirodhara treatment involves the flow of warm medicated oil across your forehead.  This allows heat to escape through the sutures of the skull and thus calms your nervous system.  While you will most likely feel the difference after the initial treatment, a Shirodhara is best served fortnightly for 4-6 weeks depending on your needs.  Also not advised during pregnancy, this is great for those who are stressed before conceiving and stressed (or not sleeping well) after the birth of the baby.

Kati Basti

Picture
A different but effective treatment for spine/back problems as well as shoulder and knee pains.  A dough castle is built and placed on the specific area in need; warm medicated oil is then used to fill the castle and allowed to seep into the muscles over a 20-30 minute period of time.  The oil bath is continuously emptied of cooled oil and refilled with warm oil across this time.  At the end of this stage, the dough is removed and a massage is given to the area and the muscles all around.  A steam treatment is then offered to increase the effectiveness of the oil and massage.  Again a good treatment fortnightly for 4-6 weeks depending on how chronic or painful the are/joint is.  As keeping still is important in this treatment it is not recommended during pregnancy.

Netra Basti (eye conditions, conjunctivitis, dry/watery eyes)

Picture
A very relaxing treatment as warm medicated ghee fills a pool made of dough around the orbit of the eye.  An exercise of blinking one's eyes open and closed in 1 minute time frame followed by rest is all you need to do.  As the nervous system lays close to the optic nerve, this is a relaxing treatment for the whole body.  Unfortunately not advised during pregnancy and best delivered fortnightly for 4-6 sessions.

Nasya (sinus, hay fever, breathing issues)

Picture
Warm face towels are used to open up the sinuses combined with face massage several times before nose drops are administered.  We then return to warm face towels and face massage.  Again not advised during pregnancy and also best served fortnightly for 4-6 sessions.  If sinus problems are an issue for you this treatment would be good before you start your pregnancy journey - one less thing to worry about !!
